    First off thank you for such comprehensive video on saxophone. I am trying to play a song with C Major scale but its annotated in number like 1,2,3,4,5 there is some number like 5 and 6 annotated with a dot above them, how do you play those notes?

    • @Saxcomprehensive
      @Saxcomprehensive 6 днів тому

      Hi. A dot above or below a note head is to indicate staccato. This means play the note short, so instead of playing the note for its full length duration, you put your tongue on the reed to stop the note short. How short depends on the tempo of the music and the note duration. But think about playing the note about half its normal length. Hope this helps. Thanks

    Good evening, could tou please tell me how to turn off the tap tempo anoying blinking light? Thx

    • @Saxcomprehensive

      Hi. The manual does not mention how to turn off the tap tempo light which suggests it is permanent. I have never had a problem with it as I don't notice it when looking at the screen. Maybe put a bit of black tape over it to make it less visible. I have not read anywhere else or seen a video where the tap tempo light can be switched off. Thanks.

    Singing (even if done badly) helps a TON. It teaches you to not "pull" the chest voice and instead have the head and chest mix so you go up with no strain, your larinx does change and if you take that same concept to the sax you are more than half way there already

    Right, I've private tuition with great teacher, I ve been watching a lot UA-cam tutorials how to play altissimo. I had no probs to play Ab but no way to go higher, only because I was missiconcept voice movement and I was pushing downward. All this for entire year (just to learn alts)!!! Until last night when by accident I found this video. Although all others say similar principles but you made it for me. Next morning (today) play (unstable but play) altissimo D with no problem! Never thought I'll be able to do. Many, many thanks

    3:00 like this, what embouchre is this

    • @Saxcomprehensive
      @Saxcomprehensive Місяць тому

      Hi. The embouchure at 3:00 is the single lip embouchure. This is the most common used embouchure. Usually when someone starts playing the saxophone, they tend to bite down on the mouthpiece with extra pressure which adds tension to their embouchure. As the muscles around their mouths develop over time, this tension begins to release. My advice is to relax the muscles of the mouth only enough to get a sound since we often use too much pressure, more than we need. Watch videos of the best sax players and look how they position their lips. John coltrane was a great tenor player and he used a double lip embouchure. We all have our own style of forming our embouchure which develops and changes a little over time but a teacher will help with creating a good sound which is what we want. If the embouchure allows a person to create a good sound then it is the right embouchure for them. Thanks.

    In the dictionary from English to my language, there's no difference between plasterboard and drywall - they all translate as my language's version that literally translates back to English as "gypsum board". Those boards can actually amplify sound by 3..6 dB IIRC and you need two layers - as used in the video - to try to get rid of that. However, I learnt that it is better to have two different thickness layers than two identical ones. In that case, however, there is directionality to the sound deadening. With identical layers, the sound coming through is strongest at the resonant frequency of the board and when both are the same, they can excite each other. When they are different thickness, these frequencies differ and deadening can improve but you need to decide what you want to prevent: sound getting out or coming in. The video is extremely good at all levels and the options for improvement illustrate very good underlying research. What does not get mentioned explicitly is the difference between "air sound" and "contact sound". The more expensive and thicker staggered wall option reduces on the "contact sound" much better, and the "cabin in cabin" takes that to another level. In these latter options, the added air gap helps and added insulation too. On the inside, the hard walls will bounce a lot of sound around and the cabin may not be as "dry" (free from echo, reverb) as you would want. This is amplified by parallel walls. In the example here, the slanted ceiling already makes floor-ceiling not-parallel, but you could slant side walls too. That's a lot more difficult to construct, however. And it is easier to cover the walls with damping material. While this is a great solution for brass soprano, alto, and tenor instruments, let's not forget that human soprano, alto, and tenor voices can produce a lot of deciBels too. So for singers who need to practice their scales and warming ups, or arias, at "live performance" level, this booth is an ideal solution too.

    The cork you started with, was that simple clarinet tenon cork or another thickness bought from a hardware store. What you did looks very professional. Great job.

    • @Saxcomprehensive
      @Saxcomprehensive Місяць тому

      Hi. The cork I used was just a general sheet of cork bought from a hardware store. It was not thick as I had to build up layer upon layer and the first few layers had to be flexible to bend around the surface of the palm key without breaking. I think it was about 1-2 mm thick. This was the first time I tried making palm key risers and its still going strong a few years later. I'm glad how it turned out, even technicians at my local sax shop asked where I got the risers from. Check out stohrer music saxophone repair UA-cam and search for cork/ epoxy risers. He has 2 videos which inspired me to do mine. Thanks.

    I don't know how to play without the Double Liped embouchure. Is that normal for some player ?

    • @Saxcomprehensive
      @Saxcomprehensive Місяць тому

      Hi. Most people play with a single lip embouchure. Usually a person will not change between single and double but will stick to one way of playing and perfect that. If double lip embouchure works for you then you should stick with it. If you want to play with a single lip embouchure then it is just a matter of practice and getting used to that style of playing. It will take some time to switch between different forms of embouchure especially since in the beginning it will feel unnatural. Some professionals use single while others double, which means both are equally good, so don't feel that you have to learn both. Use the embouchure that is most comfortable to you. As with all techniques on the saxophone, it takes time to learn them and this is the same with the embouchure. Thanks

    Excellent video with lots of practical tips! I found a softer reed (going down at least a half strength) and Legere synthetic reeds (Signature and American Cut) make it much easier to play the lowest notes under control. I used to think going down on reed strength was a sign of weakness. I now realize, thanks in part to your videos, that’s not true. The challenge for me is finding a reed that is soft enough for the lowest notes, but hard enough for the highest notes as I continue to strengthen/improve my embouchure. Thank you!

    I have given up trying to produce a good sound. I have been very fortunate in having some of the best instruments and mouthpieces at my disposal including, Zephr, Yamaha, Buescher, Conn , Selmer , Keilwerth , Courton etc etc and all that I have been able to produce is the Bombay Taxi Horn sound. So I have decided to concentrate exclusively on subtone playing. I have mastered the classical subtone with double lip embouchure as well as with the single lip embouchure on tenor and alto. I now intensely desire to be able to play jszz subtone on tenor and alto. Please do help me find suitable instructions or tutorials or pdfs or videos etc etc. Thanking you,

      It is insane that an instrument at this price would be poorly setup from the factory. But I can say that at the sax symposium this year I tested 2 supreme and an sa80 and the sa80 played easier, suggesting that even at this price they need a local tech to finish setup.
